PreMark® Interstate Shields

The 2004 Standard Highway Signs Book published by the FHWA included the addition of interstate shields in the form of pavement markings. Since that time, there has been a growing use of these “horizontal surface signs” in lieu of or as a supplement to the typical shoulder-mounted or overhead traffic signs. The SHS Book illustrates three sizes including 6’ x 15’, 7’ x 17’6”, and 8’ x 20’, all of which are available using PreMark®. Depending on the particular location and need, other sizes can be made. Interstate Shields as large as 8’ x 36’ are very effective on highways with higher speed limits.

Many states including Texas, Maine, Florida, New York, New Mexico, Maryland, and Colorado are discovering these shields help improve traffic flow and safety by providing a clear, concise message to direct motorists to the proper lane to be in before reaching a particular exit or intersection.

PreMark® Interstate Shields are simple to apply because the large marking comes packaged in layout sequence according to the particular design. The different colors of material are interconnected making it easy and convenient to handle and position for application with a propane heat torch or a large radiant heater.

ViziGrip®

ViziGrip® is a unique feature of PreMark® designed to ensure that skid resistance and retroreflectivity are maximized especially where loss of traction in wet conditions is of major concern.

PreMark® Interstate Shields also include ViziGrip® due to the larger dimensions of the symbols and for the added safety benefit to motorcyclists.
