This project was funded through the Minneapolis Safe Routes to School program and is a pilot project that will introduce and evaluate a new median type as a traffic calming measure in front of Bancroft Elementary School. It is located in south Minneapolis on 38th Street from 12th Ave S to 15th Ave S.
Project Background:
Speeding has been identified as a problem in front of Bancroft School. We can address this by narrowing the lanes to slow down traffic. The City is proposing a 6’ stamped median on the block directly in front of the school. This would be capped at each intersection with concrete islands and signage. The travel lanes leading up to the school would gradually be narrowed on 38th street from 12th Ave S and 15th Ave S approaching the school.(see second page of this document) There would be no impact on parking or turning movements using this treatment.
Logistically, this project would coincide with the general resurfacing of 38th Street which is scheduled for mid-August of this year. Financially, it is an independent project that will be paid for out of the city’s capital improvement budget for Safe Routes to School.
